SCA Exhibition: The Gymnasium
The Gymnasium is the debut exhibition on main campus at The University of Sydney. Curated by Liam Garstang, the presentation pays tribute to the site’s former function as a gymnasium.
As Eric Chaline notes in The Temple of Perfection: A History of the Gym, the gymnasium operates not only as a place of physical pursuit but also “a place that assembled the artistic and the political, the enlightened and the reactionary, touching on many areas of life, culture, and society.”
Situated in a space that has long brought diverse communities together, The Gymnasium brings together a varied group of artists connected by their shared history as SCA Alumni.
Across the show performative and kinetic artworks speak to ideas of endurance and action, while others have been resolved through attentive and meticulous application of purpose.
A celebration of a new kind of rigour, The Gymnasium is a fitting relaunch of the former Old Teachers’ College gymnasium towards future aspirations.
